Logging and Recovery

چکیده

DEFINITION Logging and recovery ensure that failures are masked to the users of transaction-based data management systems by providing automatic treatment for different kinds of failures, such as transaction failures, system failures (crashes), media failures and disasters. The main goal is to guarantee the atomicity (A) and durability (D) properties of ACID transactions by providing undo recovery for failed transactions and redo recovery for committed transactions. Logging is the task of collecting redundant data needed for recovery.

Adaptive Logging for Distributed In-memory Databases

A new type of logs, the command log, is being employed to replace the traditional data log (e.g., ARIES log) in the inmemory databases. Instead of recording how the tuples are updated, a command log only tracks the transactions being executed, thereby effectively reducing the size of the log and improving the performance. Command logging on the other hand increases the cost of recovery, because...

Taurus: A Parallel Transaction Recovery Method Based on Fine-Granularity Dependency Tracking

Logging is crucial to performance in modern multicore main-memory database management systems (DBMSs). Traditional data logging (ARIES) and command logging algorithms enforce a sequential order among log records using a global log sequence number (LSN). Log flushing and recovery after a crash are both performed in the LSN order. This serialization of transaction logging and recovery can limit t...

Lazy Logging and Prefetch-Based Crash Recovery in Software Distributed Shared Memory Systems

In this paper, we propose a new, efficient logging protocol, called lazy logging, and a fast crash recovery protocol, called the prefetch-based crash recovery (PCR), for software distributed shared memory (SDSM). Our lazy logging protocol minimizes failure-free overhead by logging only data indispensable for correct recovery, while our PCR protocol reduces the recovery time by prefetching data ...

Trading off logging overhead and coordinating overhead to achieve efficient rollback recovery

In the rollback recovery of large-scale long-running applications in a distributed environment, pessimistic message logging protocols enable failed processes to recover independently, though at the expense of logging every message synchronously during fault-free execution. In contrast, coordinated checkpointing protocols avoid message logging, but they are poor in scalability with a sharply inc...

An Asynchronous Recovery Scheme based on Optimistic Message Logging for the Mobile Computing Systems

To provide the fault-tolerance for the mobile computing systems, many checkpointing-based recovery schemes have been proposed. However, considering the nature of the mobile environment in which some mobile hosts (MHs) are often disconnected from the network and the probability of concurrent failures on MHs is high, any kind of coordination during the checkpointing and even during the recovery m...

The Cost of Recovery in Message Logging Protocols

ÐPast research in message logging has focused on studying the relative overhead imposed by pessimistic, optimistic, and causal protocols during failure-free executions. In this paper, we give the first experimental evaluation of the performance of these protocols during recovery. Our results suggest that applications face a complex trade-off when choosing a message logging protocol for fault to...
